Tems Makes History as the first Nigerian Artiste to Debut N0.1 on Billboard Hot 100

Tems, One of Nigeria’s fastest-rising musicians, has made history as the first Nigerian artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Tems hit this mark with her feature on Future’s Wait For U. The song also features international act Drake.

This astounding feat marks Future’s second Hot 100 – and his first as the main singer, while it’s Drake’s tenth No. 1.

The single, off Future’s LP I Never Liked You, is one of Future’s three tracks on the Hot 100’s top 10 this week, Puffin on Zootiez, at No. 4, ”712PM,” at No. 8, and I’m Dat N***a, at No. 10.

“Wait For U” was released on April 29 on Future’s album I Never Liked You. The song was released via Freebandz/Epic Records. It is the 1,137th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 63-year history, and the 61st to debut at the top. The music video was released on May 5, 2022.

Previously, Tems made history with one of Wizkid’s most successful singles, “Essence.” Essence reached the Billboard top 10 chart last year, becoming the first Nigerian song to do so.

In 2021, Tems earned two US top 40 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, with her collaboration with Drake on the song “Fountains,” off his Certified Lover Boy album and Wizkid’s single “Essence”, which reached the top ten following a remix with Justin Bieber. The song also earned her a Grammy Award nomination. In the same year, Tems was ranked number one on the Billboard Next Big Sound chart and number five on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart.
