The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to resolve the ongoing strike by academic and non-academic staff unions of universities.

NLC also said it would organize a special meeting of the Central Working Committee, CWC, of all its affiliate unions to decide on the next line of action, if the government fails to take urgent steps to resolve this issue.

This decision was contained in a statement issued at the end of the meeting between NLC leaders andrepresentatives of the university unions, in Abuja.

On February 14, Academic Staff Union of Universities declared a one-month warning strike over unsettled demands by the Federal government. The union however, went into a full strike in March, after the Federal government failed to meet its demands.

The union’s demands include the government’s refusal to adopt the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) payroll software. Others include the endorsement of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, which it said was concluded in May 2021; release of the reports of visitation panels to federal universities, and distortions in salary payment challenges. ASUU is also demanding funding for the revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, improved funding of state universities and payment of promotion arrears.

The NLC has urged the government to immediately set up an effective panel that will resolve all issues with university unions within 21 days.

Meanwhile, NLC on it’s part will convene a meeting of its Central working Committee at the end of the ultimatum to decide its next line of action.
