Netflix announces release date of Korean ‘Money Heist’ remake

Global streaming platform Netflix has recently announced that the highly-anticipated Korean version of Money Heist will drop just in time to join the lineup.

Netflix has officially released the first teaser trailer for the Korean remake of the Spanish crime drama, fully titled Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1, and revealed that the show will premiere on June 24, 2022.

The popular La Casa de Papel series known in English as Money Heist, ran for five seasons on Netflix before ending in December 2021. The show followed a misfit group of thieves carrying out two large-scale elaborate heists on the Royal Mint of Spain and the Bank of Spain. The series was an international hit, and quickly cemented itself in popular culture with its iconic theme song and costumes.

In the first poster released for Money Heist: Korea, the memorable heist uniforms are given a unique twist. Back in January 2022, Netflix released a teaser title and cast announcement showing the character of the Professor choosing from a wall of masks.

Now, in the first full look at the new series, the same red coverall jumpsuits that the Spanish characters wore are shown, but instead of Salvador Dalí masks, the Korean heist team will wear traditional Korean Hahoe-inspired masks.

According to Netflix, the reboot will follow a storyline similar to the original, but will be “set in a fictional Joint Economic Area, in a world where the Korean Peninsula faces reunification.”

Variety shares the synopsis for the series as follows: “Money Heist: Korea takes place as North and South Korea are on the verge of a peaceful reunification after nearly 80 years of division. But as the nations prepare to print a brand-new unified currency, a heist is hatched. A genius strategist known as the Professor assembles a motley crew of top-tier thieves from north and south in an attempt to steal the new currency straight from the mint.”

All nine original characters will be included in the remake — Professor (played by Yoo Ji-tae), Berlin (Park Hae-soo, famously known for his work on Squid Game), Tokyo (Jun Jong-seo), Moscow (Lee Won-jong), Denver (Kim Ji-hun), Nairobi (Jang Yoon-ju), Rio (Lee Hyun-woo), Helsinki (Kim Ji-hoon), and Oslo (Lee Kyu-ho).

In the new teaser trailer, a voice-over makes a bold statement: “A robber who steals petty cash either gets killed after being chased or ends up in jail. But a robber who steals at a massive scale can change the world and even become a hero. Of all the money heists, we’ll pull off the biggest one yet. The public will watch this greatest show on earth live. And they will root for us.”
