Kuje Prison Attacked by TerroristsSuspected terrorists have attack the Kuje Medium Prison in Abuja.

The prison  came under attack around 10:27 p.m. on Thursday, July 5 with series of bomb explosions and gun shots.

The attackers used three bombs and forcibly gained control of four entry and exit points.

The prison, which is located in Kuje Area Council of the FCT, lies outside the Abuja city centre, 47 kilometres to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, and 24 kilometres to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Investigation revealed that the suspected terrorists stormed the facility from the back of the premises.

The loud explosion and the gunshots stirred panic and confusion as residents were seen running into safety.

According to Premium Times, Dangerous criminals, including apprehended Boko Haram terrorists, are held in the prison. It also houses high profile public officers standing trial or already convicted.

“Three weeks ago, several high profile terrorists were relocated to Kuje prison,” the prison according to one of the prison workers as recorded by Premium Times.

Kuje prison has a capacity of about 550 but currently detains about 1000 inmates, a prison source said.

There are also claims that the authorities had received intelligence reports of the high possibility of an attack there a few hours before the invasion.

Despite earlier warning, the prison was still attacked by men said to be terrorists.
