Safety Measures to Take During the Elections

Everybody must feel comfortable and secure when exercising their right to vote because elections are crucial in any democratic society.

  • Be logical with  political conversations in public: Although political debates can be sincere and emotional, it’s crucial to respect opposing viewpoints and hold civil and productive dialogues.
  • Get ready: Know your polling unit, understand how to cast your vote and become familiar with the issues and candidates appearing on the ballot.
  • Be watchful: Be at alert whenever you attend political rallies and demonstrations because they could turn violent. If you must be in a crowded area, exercise extreme caution.
  • Register phone numbers of the local police stations in your contacts list for emergencies.
  • Avoid late-night movements: limit late night activities this period.
  • Always keep a form of identification on you, such as a driver’s licence or national ID card.
  • Inspect Before Boarding Any Public Transport:  You must examine carefully before getting into a bus or cab at night. Remember that you cannot run from something you cannot see.
  • Inform your family and friends of your whereabouts: Tell them where you’re going, even if it’s just a few metres from home. To let your loved ones know where you are going or where you are right now, all it takes is a quick call or SMS.
  • Never disregard a phone call. During this election season, paying attention to your phone calls is crucial. Make sure you and everyone else are concerned about safety.
  • Help stop political violence: Because elections are unpredictable, refrain from using violence and constantly promote nonviolence.

Please exercise your right to vote and participate in the political process, but please do so reasonably and safely.
